Everything You Need to Know About LED Screen Resolution

Understanding the Relationship Between Pixel Pitch, Resolution and LED Screen Choice

The smaller the pixel pitch, the shorter the ideal viewing distance. This distance therefore influences the pitch you should choose for your screen. However, pitch should not be the only selection criterion, as other factors must also be considered.

LED screen resolution is often pushed into the background, with sellers usually emphasizing pixel pitch. Although resolution and pitch are closely related, it is essential to understand their relationship and their impact.

More and more manufacturers now offer packaged LED wall configurations with fixed dimensions, marketed as HD, 4K or even 8K screens. However, these terms must be analyzed carefully.

A screen is considered HD, 4K or 8K if it offers the following resolutions:

  • HD = 1920 pixels x 1080 pixels
  • 4K = 3840 pixels x 2160 pixels
  • 8K = 7680 pixels x 4320 pixels

Regardless of the screen size, whether it measures 2 m² or 800 m², it can be called 4K if its resolution is 3840 pixels x 2160 pixels. Naturally, the larger the pitch, the larger the screen must be to achieve 4K resolution.

Understanding the Terms Resolution and Pixel Pitch

Let us take practical examples to better understand the relationship between dimensions, pitch and resolution.

Example 1: imagine an outdoor LED screen with a 10 mm pitch, measuring 19.2 m x 10.8 m, or approximately 207 m². Despite its large size, this LED screen will be considered HD because its resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Resolution calculation:

  • 19200 mm ÷ 10 mm = 1920 pixels
  • 10800 mm ÷ 10 mm = 1080 pixels

Example 2: take an indoor screen with a 2.5 mm pitch, measuring 3.66 m x 2.06 m, or around 7.53 m². This screen cannot be called HD because its resolution is lower than standard HD resolution.

Resolution calculation:

  • 3660 mm ÷ 2.5 mm = 1464 pixels
  • 2060 mm ÷ 2.5 mm = 824 pixels

These two examples show that a screen with a 10 mm pitch can offer a better resolution than a screen with a 2.5 mm pitch, even if the latter has a finer pitch.

How to Choose the Right Resolution and Pixel Pitch for a Screen

At Secret Studio Production, we are not resellers of standard products and we do not offer packages based only on commercial labels. The resolution of an LED screen, whether for indoor or outdoor use, must be studied according to your specific needs and technical constraints.

The main objective is to find the best balance between price, real use, viewing distance and technical performance.

An investment in an LED screen can only be judged as relevant in the medium or long term, taking into account operating cost, durability and value for money.

Many competitors communicate screen prices after only a few clicks on an online configurator. However, asking for the price of a giant screen is like asking for the price of a house: a detailed study is necessary to consider size, pitch, resolution, installation and technical constraints.
